Padukka, Vidyachandra Pirivena Viharaya is a temple that was in improving the educational knowledge of many people in the area. It played a major role in this. A similar service was carried out by the Vidyachandra Dhamma School, a subsidiary of the Pirivena. Ven. Kurugala Piyarathana Thera and Ven. Padukke Sirinivasa Thera sacrificed their lives to protect Buddhist sentiments during the early Christian missionary period. The late Mandawala Soratha Maha Sthavirapadayan carried out that policy. This Dhamma School was started by Ven. Mandawala Soratha was a great help in developing the Dhamma knowledge of the Buddhist children and in creating a disciplined and better society.
Vidyachandra Dhamma School did start by Mr. M.D.H. Jayawardena and Mr.M.P. Perera on Sunday, October 31, 1965. Shortly after its inception, the Dhamma School, along with the Pirivenas, made great strides. Shortly after its the Dhamma School made great improvement, with the Pirivena. The staff who spent time in the Pirivena also provided national and religious services to the Dhamma School free of charge.
Well experienced Staff has greatly helped a large group of students improve their knowledge. However, In 1970, during the Pirivena revolution, students also dropped out of Pirivena and Dhamma school education., Eventually, by about 1977, only the ruins of a Sunday school remained. In 1977 the Chief Incumbent Ven.Soratha Thero, Ven. Kirindiwela Sumanananda Thero, Mother Dasasil, W.D.S. Mrs. Karunatilake, Mrs. Wickramasinghe re-started the Dhamma School.
About a year after the closure of the Dhamma School, the lack of a Dhamma School affected the entire area. On the instructions of the Chief Incumbents, Ven. Berannawe Wimala Thera, Ven. Karadana Mahinda Thera and Ven. Biyagama Sumanakiththi Thera accordingly, the Dhamma School was reopened in August 1979. After, registered with the Department of Buddhist Affairs under Registration No. 11/18 / DPA / L / 331. Mr. Ranjith Hewawasam is still the Deputy Principal of the Dhamma School.
After the demise of Ven. Mandawala Soratha Thero in 1996, Ven. Berannawe Wimala Thero was appointed as the Principal. With his arrival, the progress of the Dhamma School underwent a unique change. Today, more than 1,500 students are studying. A three-storeyed building with a fully equipped office has been constructed for this Dhamma School which has a staff of about 40.
Programs such as Wandana, Bodhi Pooja, Sheela Samadana, Dhamma Sermons, Guru Upahara, and Children’s Day programs are implemented to direct children to the Dhamma Mawatha. The Vidyachandra Dhamma School has a special place in the Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandala evaluations. Ven. Maliyadevapura Sirivimala Thero has been the Principal of the temple since 2016. He was a student of Ven. Berannawe Wimala Thero.
ශ්‍රී විද්‍යාචන්ද්‍ර දහම් පාසල – ශ්‍රී මහා විහාරය, පාදුක්ක
පාදුක්ක, අරුක්වත්ත, විද්‍යාචන්ද්‍ර පිරිවෙන් විහාරස්ථානය ප්‍රදේශවාසී බොහෝ පිරිසකගේ අධ්‍යාපන ඥානය දියුණූ කර දීමට මුලික වූ විහාරස්ථානයකි. මෙහි දී විද්‍යාචන්ද්‍ර පිරිවෙන ප්‍රධාන තැනක් ගත්තේය. එයට අනුබද්ධ ආයතනයක් වූ විද්‍යාචන්ද්‍ර දහම් පාසල තුළින් ද ඒ හා සමාන සේවයක් සිදුවිය. මුල් යුගය තුළ ක්‍රිස්තියානි මිෂනාරී බලවේගය පැතිර යමින් පැවති අවධියක බෝධිසත්ව ගුණෝපේත කුරුගල පියරතන හිමි, පාදුක්කේ සිරිනිවාස හිමි ආදී මහා ස්ථවිරපාදයන් වහන්සේලා තම ජිවිත පරිත්‍යාගයෙන් ප්‍රදේශවාසී බෞද්ධ ජනතාව තුළ බොදු හැගීම් ආරක්ෂා කර ගැනීමට කටයුතු කළහ. එම ප්‍රතිපත්තිය ඉදිරියට ගෙනයමින් අපවත් වී වදාළ මණ්ඩාවල සෝරත මාහා ස්ථවිරපාදයානන් වහන්සේ ද කටයුතු කරන්නට යෙදුණි. බෞද්ධ දරු දැරියන් තුළ ධර්ම ඥානය වර්ධනය කිරීමටත් විනය ගරුක ශික්ෂාකාමී ළමා පරපුරක් තුළින් යහපත් සමාජයක් ඇති කිරීමටත් මණ්ඩාවල සෝරත මිහියන් විසින් අරභන ලද මෙම දහම් පාසල විශාල පිටුවහලක් විය.
1965 ඔක්තෝබර් මස 31වැනි ඉරු දින දායක සභාවේ ගරු එම්.ඩී.එච්. ජයවර්ධන, එම්.පී. පේරේරා වැනි ප්‍රභුන්ගේ මුලිකත්වය ඇතිව විද්‍යාචන්ද්‍ර දහම් පාසල ආරම්භ විය. ආරම්භ කර නොබෝ කලකින් ම පිරිවෙන සමඟම දහම් පාසල ද විශාල දියුණුවක් කරා ගමන් කළහ. පිරිවෙණේ දී තම කාලය ඒ වෙනුවෙන් වැය කළ එහි ගුරු මණ්ඩලය ජාතික හා ආගමික සේවකයන් වශයෙන් නොමිලේම දහම් පාසලේ ද කටයුතු කළහ. පළපුරුදු ආචාර්‍යය මණ්ඩලයක ආභාෂය ලද එවක විද්‍යාචන්ද්‍ර දහම් පාසල විශාල ශිෂ්‍ය ශිෂ්‍යාවන් පිරිසකට ධර්මඥානය ලබා ගැනීමට බොහෝ සෙයින් උපකාරී විය.
එහෙත් 1970දී ඇති වූ පිරිවෙන් විප්ලවයත් සමඟ පිරිවන මෙන්ම දහම් පාසලේ ද ඇතිවූ දියුණුවට කණ කොකා හැඩීමට පටන් ගත්තේ ය. ප්‍රබෝධයකින් හා උනන්දුවකින් අධ්‍යාපනය ලැබු සිසු සිසුවියන් පිරිවෙන පමණක් නොව දහම් පාසල ද අත්හලහ. මේ නිසා 1977 පමන වන විට දහම් පාසලක නටබුන් පමණක් ඉතිරි විය. 1977 දී මෙම නටබුන් අතරට නව ජීවයක් ලබා දීමට උත්සාහ කළ විහාරාධිපති සෝරත හිමියන් ප්‍රධන කිරිඳිවැල සුමණානන්ද හිමි, දසසිල් මාතාව, ඩබ්.ඩි.එස්. කරුණාතිලක මිය, වික්‍රමසිංහ මහත්මිය යනාදී අය නැවත දහම් පාසල ආරම්භ කළහ. එහෙත් එම ආරම්භය ද වසර එක හමාරකට වැනි කෙටි කාලයකට සීමා විය.
දහම් පාසල වැසී වසරක් පමණ ගත විය දහම් පාසලක අඩුව ප්‍රදේශයටම කැපී පෙනෙන්නට විය. නැවත විහාරාධිපතීන් වහන්සේගේ අනුශාසනා මත ඒ කාර්‍ය්‍ය බෙරන්නාවේ විමල හිමි, කරදන මහින්ද හිමි, බියගම සුමනඛිත්ති හිමි යන හිමිවරුන් භාර ගත්තේය. ඒ අනුව 1979 අගෝස්තු මස නැවත දහම් පාසල ආරම්භ කළහ. බෞද්ධ කටයුතු දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ ලියාපදිංචි අංක 11/18/දපා/ලි/331 යටතේ ලියාපදිංචි වු දහම් පාසලෙහි රංජිත් හේවාවසම් මහතා වර්තමානය දක්වාම උප ප්‍රධානාචාර්‍ය ධූරයෙහි කටයුතු කරමින් සිටියි.
1996 වසරේ දී පුජ්‍ය මණ්ඩාවල සෝරත හිමියන්ගේ අපවත් වීමෙන් පසු තත් ශිෂ්‍ය පුජ්‍ය බෙරන්නාවේ විමල හිමියන් ප්‍රධානාචාර්‍යය ධූරයට පත්විය. උන් වහන්සේගේ ආගමණයත් සමඟ දහම් පාසලේ ඉදිරි ගමන අද්විතීය වෙනසකට ලක්විය. වර්තමානයේ 1500කට වැඩි සිසුන් පිරිසක් අධ්‍යාපන හදාරති. 40ක පමණ ගුරු මණ්ඩලයකින් සමන්විත මෙම දහම් පාසල සඳහා අංග සම්පූර්ණ කාර්යාලයක් සහිත තෙමහල් ගොඩනැගිල්ලක් ද ඉදිකර ඇත. තවද දරුවන්ගේ අභිවෘද්ධිය වෙනුවෙන් 2017 දහම් පාසල් සංවර්ධන කමිටුවක් ද ආරම්භ කර ඇත.
දහම් මාවතට දරුවන් යොමුකරවීම සඳහා වන්දනා, බෝධි පුජා, ශීල සමාදාන, ධර්ම දේශනා,ගුරු උපහාර සහ ළමා දින වැඩසටහන් වැනි වැඩසටහන් ක්‍රියාත්මක කෙරේ. ශාසනාරක්ෂක බල මණ්ඩල ඇගයීම් වලදී විද්‍යචන්ද්‍ර දහම් පාසලට සුවිශේෂ තැනක් හිමිවීම ද විශේෂත්වයකි. 2016 වසරේ සිට බෙරන්නාවේ විමල හිමියන්ගේ ශිෂ්‍ය පුජ්‍ය මලියදේවපුර සිරිවිමල හිමියන් මෙහි ප්‍රධානාචාර්‍යය ලෙස කටයුතු කරයි.
